Chapter 4: Union with Christ - “Not I, But Christ” The New Creation is not sustained by effort, it is sustained by union. Many understand the Cross. Many believe in forgiveness. Many pursue transformation. But few truly live from the revelation of union with Christ. And without union, the Christian life will always feel like striving to become what you were never meant to produce. •The End of Separation From the beginning, separation was the great fracture. Man did not just fall into sin, he fell into independence. • thinking apart from God • living apart from God • striving apart from God But in Christ, separation has been completely removed. “But he that is joined unto the Lord is one spirit.” (1 Corinthians 6:17) Not close to Him. Not visiting Him. One with Him. This is not poetic language, it is the deepest spiritual reality of the believer. •“Not I, But Christ” “I have been crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me…” (Galatians 2:20) This is the defining statement of union. There is still a “you”, but your life is no longer independent. Your source has changed. This dismantles two extremes: • self-reliance (“I will do this”) • passivity (“I do nothing”) Union is neither. It is co-labouring with Christ as your life. •Christ: Your Life “For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God… Christ, who is our life…” (Colossians 3:3–4) Christ is not just part of your life. He is not an addition. He is not a support system. He is your life. This means: • your strength flows from Him • your righteousness is sourced in Him • your wisdom comes through Him The Christian life is not you living for God, it is Christ living through you. •Abiding vs Striving Jesus did not say “try harder.” He said: “Abide in me, and I in you…” (John 15:4) Abiding is not effort, it is remaining in awareness of union. A branch does not strain to produce fruit. It simply stays connected to the vine. Striving begins when connection is forgotten. Rest begins when union is realised. •The Illusion of Independence One of the greatest deceptions is thinking you are acting independently from God. Even in failure, many say: “I messed up.” “I failed.” “I need to do better.” But union reframes everything. Apart from Him, you can do nothing (John 15:5). But in Him, all things flow. This means: • victory is not self-produced • righteousness is not self-maintained • growth is not self-generated It is all the result of remaining in Him. •Communion: The Lifestyle of Union Union is not a doctrine, it is a daily reality. It is cultivated through communion: • awareness of His presence • sensitivity to His voice • yielding to His leading This is not about striving to “feel God.” It is about recognising He is already within you. You are not trying to access Him. You are learning to walk with Him within. •The Exchange of Living Union means your life is no longer your own. “For to me to live is Christ…” (Philippians 1:21) This is the great exchange: • your weakness - His strength • your limitation - His sufficiency • your will - His purpose This is not loss-it is liberation. Because everything you were trying to produce in your own strength is now supplied through Him. •The Key: Awareness of Union Union is constant, but awareness is not. You can be one with Christ and still live as though you are separate. This is why Scripture calls us to: • abide • remain • set our minds Because what you are aware of determines how you live. When you are conscious of union: • fear loses ground • striving ceases • peace increases • fruit flows naturally •Walking in Union Daily Union is expressed in the ordinary: • choosing His thoughts over your own • responding in love instead of reaction • yielding instead of controlling • trusting instead of striving It is not dramatic-it is consistent. And over time, this produces a life that reflects Christ without effort. •Activation: Live From “Not I” This is the invitation: Stop living as though you are alone. Stop carrying what you were never meant to carry. Shift from: “I must do this” - “Christ in me will live this.” Let this become your reality: • when you speak • when you think • when you act • Prayer Father, Bring me into deeper awareness of my union with You. Where I have lived independently, Reveal it and draw me back into abiding. Teach me to live from “not I, but Christ.” To trust Your life within me, And to yield fully to Your Spirit. Let striving fall away, And let Your life flow freely through mine. I choose to abide, To remain, And to live as one with You. In Jesus’ Name. Chapter 5: Christ in You - The Indwelling Life This will take union from revelation into continuous internal awareness, where God is no longer someone you reach for-but Someone you live with, constantly.
